Denver Comic Con 2012!

Denver Comic Con was our FIRST convention EVER, and what an incredible event it was!! People were so excited to support a local artist, the free sketches were flying from Robin’s fingers, and the atmosphere couldn’t have been better! Couldn’t attend? Don’t worry, they’re already scheduling next year with STAN LEE as their first signed guest!

We took lots of photos because there was LOTS to see! Here’s some highlights from the convention if you missed it!

THE FIRST AND LAST SALE

We were selling books from five minutes before open to five minutes after closing, and we made sure to get photographs of the two individuals that made our first convention particularly special.

The first was Kristy of Girls of Geek, a local blogger for all things geek! Not only was Kristy a pleasure to meet, she and Michelle were incredibly supportive leading up to, and during, the convention! Whenever I would come up against a difficulty preparing for the convention, Kristy would always say “Don’t worry!! I’ll send my Jedis right over!” And you know what? Things ALWAYS got better after that. 🙂 They also created a ton of articles and videos at the convention, so if you want the full scoop, definitely check out their site, Girls of Geek!!

Our last sale happened at the very end of Sunday. The lights were going down, the final announcements had been made, and all around us artists and vendors were closing up shop. I turned to Cory and Kenton, my two helpers for the weekend (or Booth Beaus, as I called them…in my mind…) and said, “Well, I guess that’s it. Time to wrap up and tear down.” As we began to pack things away, suddenly an older gentleman approached the booth. He put down his program, where our booth (#140) had been marked out. “All weekend,” he announced, “I have been trying to get to your booth!!” What a wonderful thing to hear, that somebody had made us, a little tiny company just starting out, a priority! “Well sir,” I replied, “Then I must make you a free sketch for your troubles!” As I began working on the sketch, he picked up the book and started reading through it, chuckling at Tama and Mizha’s squabbles, and asking me questions about the book. At the end, he asked if he could buy a copy, AND, as a special request, get a picture with me. I agreed, on the condition I could get a picture with him!

THE DCC FLOOR

DCC was the second largest opening crowd in history, after New York Comic Con! We had an estimated 20,000 attendees, and this is just a sampling of everything that was on the floor:

The Tardis may look lonely in this shot, but I can assure you that it had a lot of company through the weekend! As a burgeoning Whovian, it was an exciting addition to the floor!

This was a true salesman. As he put it, “Every minute without a mustache is a minute without dignity!” In the end, we couldn’t resist purchasing one. At least now, every once in a while, we will have a little dignity!

Robin demonstrating the essence of dignity, right there. In action. Tut tut, good sir!

These were by Geek Chic, along with other fun curiosities such as wooden weapons, dice towers, and more!

Some of the coolest table top role-playing furniture I’ve ever seen. Don’t want to disrupt your game? No problem, the leaves fold over the top, leaving everything undisturbed.

Also by the multi-talented Geek Chic! If I had more money…well, I’d have a lot more furniture in my house, that much is certain!!

The floors were hopping, particularly on Saturday! Robin hardly had the chance to put down her pen, she was so busy with her free sketches! Incredibly energy!

The massive convention center blue bear — also featured in the exclusive DCC print!! Several stories tall it leans in to look at the tens of thousands of people flocking to the first DCC!

OUR BOOTH

We were booth 140 this year! Robin and Cory were running things, along with our good friend Kenton, to form the Moko Press team!! Here are a few photos of us! Please be on the lookout for us at other conventions soon!

COMICBOOK CLASSROOM

What many people don’t realize is that all Comic Cons are independent groups. “Comic Con” did not “come” to Denver. It was built, from the ground up, by local people as a CHARITY EVENT for the Comicbook Classroom. Comic Book Classroom is a nonprofit, free, after-school program for fifth through eighth grade students that teaches literacy and arts education through comic books. Comic Book Classroom uses a state standards-based curriculum and is dedicated to educating at-risk and under-served students through teaching the basics of the craft, starting with the elements of structure and storytelling. To graduate from the program, students apply this knowledge in creating their own comic book. Comic Book Classroom believes that a love of comics can foster a love of reading and learning.

THE COSTUMES

What convention would be complete without costumes? My particular favorites were the parent & son combinations on Father’s day. Particularly the man that dressed up as Robin to be the side-kick to his son’s Batman. Parenting — you’re doing it right!!

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone for making our first convention so special! We were so excited to meet existing fans and to make new friends! The support was absolutely incredible, and we will most certainly be back!! Look for us at Denver Comic Con 2013!
